IUOttawaGolfn 2011, Rivermead will be in the third year of our partnership with the University of Ottawa Men’s Competitive Sport Golf Team. The team has been in existence for 18 years and participates in provincial, national, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) golf events. The Team has won six provincial championships in 14 tries, the last one in the fall of 2009, and also won a Quebec QSSF provincial championship. They have also won three NCAA invitational tournaments in the USA and placed in the top three, 11 more times over the same period.

In eight National University Championships run by Golf Canada, the team would be ranked in fifth to sixth place overall, making the cut each time, out of 20 plus competing teams in each of the years. No other university team in eastern Canada has a record that strong.

The team is unusual among Canadian university golf teams in that it has the nucleus of a year-round program for its members. It has a long-standing committed coach, whose continued goal is to put together a competitive golf program, which would encourage talented players after junior golf to remain in Canada for their university education, hopefully at Ottawa. At present, the lack of competitive golf programs at Canadian universities and colleges still forces too many of our best young male golfers to leave Canada for their post-secondary education. All too often, these young people establish personal and professional ties during their education, and so they don’t return to Canada. Their talents are lost to Canadian golf, in particular, and to Canada, in general.

Rivermead supports the team by providing them with generous golf course access throughout the season, and discounted club memberships. Rivermead will hold a Pro-Am event on June 22, 2011 to raise money for the team.
